Thrown Among Barbarians the prize story by Dane Coolidge appears on page 55-61 and is illustrated by Merle Johnson. Dane Coolidge also appears listed on page 87 as a member of the Philolexian Literary Society and there is a group photograph the next page. Dane Coolidge went on to write Hidden Water in 1910 the first of fifty western novels and published hundreds of stories in pulp magazines. He was a student at Stanford obviously but also noted for dropping out of Harvard Graduate school because it was boring and wound up marrying a Stanford Professor. Not only a field naturalist and photographer for museums Dane Coolidge was also known for writing authentically about cowboys in three non fiction titles Texas Cowboys, Arizona Cowboys and California Cowboys. This published story pre dates Hidden Water by about 12 years. An important and unique item for a Dane Coolidge collection. Very good condition with some soiling to covers and a weak front inner hinge. Very Good In-store inventory.
