This is the typewritten manuscript of translator Guy Wernham, who give an "English Approximation" to Antonin Artaud's script dated November 28, 1947, that was eventually rejected by Radio Diffusion Francaise. The original air date was to be 2 February 1948, but was censored by the French Government, and Artaud died a month later.
The manuscript is in three parts: a translation of the radio play; extracts from the press and; letters to Fernand Pouey, the Director of Dramatic and Literary broadcasts in France at the time.
Guy Wernham is a translator of note, as he published an early English translation of the Chants of Maldoror, by the Comte de Lautreamont, a prose poem published in 1868, but later championed by Surrealists in the 1920s. Re-published in 1965, Wernham's version has been in print ever since.
