n.d. Hardcover. long case. Fair / No jacket. Item #104855

Geneva Bible, also known as the "Breeches" Bible. This verison of the bible was created during Queen Mary's reign in England when the protestants were out of favor. Exiles in Geneva, Switzerland, create a new translation that was used in England after Mary died. It was the standard in England for 51 years, until King James sponsored a new translation as he felt many of the annotations in the margins were anti-clerical and smacked of republicanism. The Geneva Bible is noted for for the word 'breeches' instead of the Tyndale and King James versions which use the word 'apurns' or 'aprons'.

This was a family bible. It was published around 1615, belonging to the Sprake family in Dorset, England, The covers are very worn. The spine is down to the bare leather, with no print or impressions evident. Lacks the general title page but the new testament title page is present and the title page for the concordances is present although torn and missing the lower part of the page. Some pages creased or damaged, but the Old and New Testaments are present, as well as the Apocrypha. A few pages have been partially torn out. There are a few handwritten notes in the margins.
