Accompanying essay, "Hidden Women," by Judith Thurman. The subject models include Suzy Parker, Gardner McKay, Audrey Hepburn, Buster Keaton, and Dovima (with the famous rearing elephants portrait). The movie Funny Face [Paramount Pictures, 1957, which starred Fred Astaire as the fashion photographer, and Audrey Hepburn as his model] was based largely on Avedon during this very period in his career.
