Gooden was responsible for reintroducing copper engraving as a book illustration technique. Describing Gooden's Work, Campbell Dodgson wrote, "Craftsmanship, scholarship, taste, wit, and the careful nicety with which this true artist engraves an ornament, puts pen to paper, or affixes a seal, commend his work to the admiration of amateurs who can appreciate, if they cannot actually possess themselves, engravings consistently maintained at so high a level of achievement."
Printed letterpress on handmade paper. 4to., bound in full vellum, which is elegantly decorated and titled in gilt, with mottled purple-and-green end papers. The top-edge if trimmed and gilt; the other edges are untrimmed. This copy is very good+. Housed in a lightly sunned, paper-covered slipcase (which matches the end papers), with printed paper label at spine.
