Les Moeurs caused a scandal when first published, as it was assumed one of the characters was based on the sanctimonious queen Marie Leszyznska, wife of Louis XV. A popular book, it was eventually banned, then ten years later it was accused to promoting regicide, whereupon Toussant fled to Prussia.
