Henry: A World Poets' Anthology Inspired by William Faulkner's Painting
Bern Porter, 1970. Hardcover. Fine / Fine. Item #100620
William Faulkner was an artist in the San Francisco Bay Area during the Fifties and Sixties. A painting he'd done, titled "Henry" affected so many poets around the world that this book was made to collect them in one place. The book was published by Bern Porter, himself an artist, as well as a publisher and a scientist on the Manhattan Project. The book was owned by Fred Martin, an artist who was a leader in the San Francisco Figurative movement in the fifties, and was a longtime administrator at the San Francisco Art Institute, shepherding many artist projects through their doors. The book is signed by Bern Porter, his wife, the anthropoligist Margaret Eudine Preston, the photographer Kem Lee, and Faulkner himself. The book is inscribed to Martin by Porter. Also included is a handwritten letter signed by Faulkner to Fred Martin, and a signed typewritten card. Printed in limited quantities, it's unknown how many had been distributed.
